Desmond Newbury

Each of us has created a playlist that reflects the characters we play. Randolph’s comments and song explanations are below and next to the playlist.

Desmond is a little fish in a big pond; In fact, he’s even smaller than the other little fish, so the pond probably looks twice the size to him. Often feeling overwhelmed and confused, he tries his best to make up for his faults, using the skills thrust upon him.

Little Lion Man – Mumford and Sons
Making mistakes and taking the blame. Desmond likes to put the world on his shoulders, and almost always thinks it’s a deserved spot. Plus, it’s a banger.

Lightning Bolt – Jake Bugg
Desmond Newbury is a pessimistic man, often thinking the results of most actions will be dire. But that doesn’t stop him from saying “ah, f*** it” and diving in headfirst, often literally.

Stay Gold – First Aid Kit
Folk song about wanting the good moments to stay that way. Des is a folk boy who wants the good moments to stay that way.

Master Pretender – First Aid Kit
A lot of people wear masks, and Desmond can at times, often feeling overwhelmed by this adventuring lifestyle. But the song takes a positive turn about pulling yourself together to help someone else. Almost like you do in a D&D party, eh?

Simple Pleasures – Jake Bugg
So, it looks like Randolph knows three artists so far. Desmond’s willingness to learn from his peers, their selflessness and their need to help.

I Will Wait – Mumford and Songs
Yep, that’s still three artists. “You forgave and I won’t forget”. This new group Desmond has found himself with is one he’s quite fond of. None of them are perfect, but they all can try to be the best version of themselves with the backup of the others.

Overkill – Colin Hay
This is anxiety. Desmond is anxiety. Picture Desmond banging his head against the back of an inn door thinking of all his social interactions that day.

Pass It On – The Coral
Just a nice song about trying to do good to make up for the bad.

Dirty Paws – Of Monsters and Men
I mean the lyrics are a bit childish, but Desmond is a bit childish too. But the beat drags on in a way that makes you want to keep moving.

Crystals – Of Monsters and Men
Finding himself with powers, a possible gift. But he knows all too well the consequences this gift can have. Overwhelmed and yet able to do good because of it.

Mostly – Vian Izak
Not going to lie, having people pop up in his head is a terrifying thing for Des.

Will I Find My Home – Juniper Vale
All about this group, and his willingness to trust them. Having to leave his old home, these new people he is walking around with are the closest thing he has got.

JCB – Nizlopi
Randolph’s first album was a CD with just this one song on; So, it’s unclear whether this is for him or Desmond, but both think back on those days spent farming with their family with great joy.

Old Pine – Ben Howard
Again, more nostalgia for Des’ past; it’s almost like that’s where he wishes he still was. Something he knows he can’t have again.

Unchangeable Love – Juniper Vale
I just like this song. There’s probably something to say about needing someone to pull you out of the depths, even for resilient people, but also, I just like this song.

The Don – The View
Desmond didn’t quite fit in with the others during his stint at an orphanage. He had friends, but not real enough to carry on through.

Learning to Fly – Tom Petty
Something not necessarily negative? Desmond is a young adult without a grasp on himself or the world around him, he’s trying though.
